Today we are looking at a delicate facet of the art market. Although this is not quantum physics, not everything is immediately intuitively understandable. (Is that intentional?) Today’s question is:
What on earth is a Gallery Bond?
The term GALLERY BOND is also a new addition to my vocabulary. I first came across it a few months ago when an artist I know started offering Gallery Bonds of her artworks. My first impression was that it was a high-quality print on or behind a glossy plate – I couldn’t tell exactly from the visual impression alone.
In the course of creating my catalog, I came to the conclusion that I would also like to offer something like this for my digitally created artwork RELATIVITÄTSVISION, and suddenly the need arose to find out exactly what Gallery Bond actually means. After all, you can’t offer something that you can only explain in a stuttering and incomplete manner. Keyword: dangerous half-knowledge.
Hence the correct technical explanation:
A GALLERY BOND is a print on premium photo paper, mounted behind acrylic glass and backed with Alu-Dibond plate.
One can kind of imagine what acrylic glass is, but what about Alu-Dibond? Dibond is the brand name for a composite material with a sandwich construction. It consists of two 0.3 millimeter thick aluminum layers that are thermally bonded to a polyethylene core. Dibond is therefore lighter than aluminum and thus more suitable for art installations. The term Alu-Dibond used on print manufacturer websites has a slightly redundant aura for me, because Dibond already refers to the use of aluminum. We’re basically saying Alu-aluminum composite panel, but well, that’s going too far now.
And finally, I consider it not insignificant to conclude our analysis of the term with the transition from the technical explanation to the fantastic word creation of the “Gallery Bond”. And these explanations are now based on my personal speculations. So we come back to the dangerous half-knowledge – the circle closes or apparently never really closes.
You have created a really great product for the art market. But “High-quality print on photo paper BEHIND acrylic glass BACKED WITH Alu-Dibond panel” does not go well with any marketing approach. So let’s just use a word syllable of Dibond – “Bond” and combine it with “Gallery” to create “Gallery Bond”! Because the reasonably well-versed foreign English speaker and especially the native English speaker associate the word “Bond” used in this fashion with one thing first and foremost: a security. And suddenly we’re no longer just talking about a print, we’re talking about an ART SECURITY PAPER, i.e. a VALUABLE INVESTMENT that also looks great on the wall! It doesn’t get any better than this 🤓📈
