The king of snakes on his most magnificent day.
Since my childhood I have been fascinated by the mythical creature of the basilisk which has the iridescent body of a snake and the head of a rooster. According to legend, a basilisk lived in a fountain in Vienna whose gaze killed. He could be defeated by holding a mirror up to him.
The basilisk is considered the king of snakes and the legend gives it an iconic character in Vienna. And interestingly enough, I always imagined it to be terrible but equally beautiful. And it was only when this triptych was finished that the name BASILISKENHOCHZEIT (English: basilisk wedding) intuitively came to my mind.
For me, the many fantastic shapes and colors that run across the canvases embody the central role that the basilisk has played in mythology since ancient times. And what could be more magnificent than the wedding of this mysterious mythical creature?
